The Lantern Frogs

In the morning after He began
the universe, it was empty and still.
and uninhabited. His spirit ran
and followed breeze and sunlight up each hill
and down again. Great towers newly built
and yet to fill with story. So He set
the first beings to wander without guilt
or avarice. They dwell among us yet,
o frogs who watch adream, cast little croaks
over the empty landscape. Enter we
to marvel over spire and field. Sweet joke
they are, awakened, glowing. Meant to be
is this world, creatures entering in throngs
but till then, wanderers, and trilling songs.
