Zubin's Demise

Archmagician Zubin of the Fey was not a happy man.
Cursed with babyface at a very young age
by a Swamp Witch from Frog Master Marsh
he felt he was never able to command respect from his peers.
The perceived inadequacy of his prepubescent appearance drove him mad
.
When the Immortal Flames emerged
Zubin saw them as an opportunity
to seize the power he was denied in life,
and he threw himself into the inferno.

For what felt like days he tumbled through the raging fire
his body repeatedly being torn asunder and rearranged
until he no longer recognized himself.
He screamed in agony,
but no such sound emerged;
only the whispered cackles
of the souls with which his was now entwined -
echoing all around him like a cacophony of giddy hyenas.

And just as soon as Zubin began to regret his decision,
he lost consciousness
for the last time.

When he awoke he found himself standing alone in a wretched landscape
an endless abyss of swirling black fog -
it was sticky like tar and whispered incantations as it blew past.

The voices of the souls inside him were no longer tormenting sneers.
Instead they spoke to him
in hushed tones that pierced through the darkness
of the shadows that now adorned his shoulders.
