Once, I was a man. I called the forest home, the animals dwelling there my brothers and sisters. My days of making war were over. I simply tended my garden. I practiced new spells of healing and protection in the dew-sprinkled glade behind the waterfall next to my cottage. I was finally at peace.

Just before dawn on that fateful day—the last of my humanity—I was awakened by a chilling Noise I’d never heard before. The Noise now rings forever in my haunted mind, like a great fire crackling, slowly incinerating my love for the world to which I once belonged. I know not from whence it came, only that it had come for me, and me alone. Somehow, in that ghastly cacophony, I heard the Noise say: “Join us.” And there was nothing I could do… but to obey.
