Maximilian Apocalypse usually goes by the name Max. "Maximilian Apocalypse of the Dark Sentinel" has a pretty ominous ring to it. It's well deserved, but grandiosity isn't Max's style.

Very little is known about Max. He is one of the Dark Sentinel's mysteries. Some say that he was formerly an agent of the Red Wizards. More specifically, they say that he was a member of a secretive police force that answered only to the highest echelons of Red Wizard power. Rumors hold that this force was used to track powerful wizards throughout the capital and neutralize them if necessary.

Whether this is true or not - Max certainly has the skills of an expert investigator. Some may call him a spy. But neither word captures the full scope of his activities. He's aided by a parrot of abnormal intelligence who can listen in upon conversations and repeat them back verbatim, with pitch-perfect voice mimicry.

When Max wants to be seen you can spot him by his always crisp suits and vibrant red ties. When he doesn't want to be seen, well, you won't see him at all.

On that note, few have ever seen Max engage in combat. At least, few are still alive who can make that claim. But sightings of Max often coincide with the discovery of freshly diced corpses. The wounds on the bodies are as clean and crisp as his suits.

So, who does Max work for? What are his aims? Nobody knows. And if I knew, I wouldn't tell you, because Max doesn't want anybody to know.

What I can tell you is this. Few are allowed to come and go from the Dark Sentinel. Max makes his office there, and perhaps rests his feet there as well.

The Dark Sentinel is not a pleasant place. It is a gateway to the Nightmare Dominion. You don't go there by accident. And if somehow you do, then you don't come back. It is controlled by dark forces, very powerful ones. Max has their blessing now. Compared to his new employers, the Red Wizards were child's play.

Is Max taking his missions from the Dark Sentinel or from forces within the Nightmare Dominion itself? I don't know. Don't ask. You don't want to attract Max's attention.

What you should know is this. If you see Max and his red headband - go. Get far away. Because something terrible is sure to happen.
