The Lore of Witch Delilah of Arcadia

Scratch a witch, and underneath you’ll find
the spells nobody ventured to write down
or even talk about. The ties that bind
the threads of life together. Every town
and caravan, each windblown flock of sheep
weaves itself in. Threads woollen, green and gold
pick out such artistry that, fast-asleep
we recognise them. Stories we were told
as little children seldom come to life,
except when witches rouse, reading the signs
and portents. With my goblin’s flame and knife
I cut the threads that wander from their lines
and set them better, steady on their pitch:
for this, and more, do thank your local witch.
