The chirp of the chickadees caught Kathleen’s attention as she walked down Noxi Road east. These comical birds were some of her favorites. She watched them for several minutes until they flew off in the direction of Rabbit Lake. She whistled for her falcon, Kez, who quickly swooped down and landed on her arm.

“I am going to go over to Rabbit Lake. I want to check on the animals and birds. When we get there you should go and get yourself something to eat. I will be fine.” Kez let out a soft screech and flew off. Kathleen knew that he would go to the lake first and check out the surroundings. If there was anything she needed to know about he would come back.

Arriving at the lake she saw Kez sitting high in a tree watching a young gal by the lake. He seemed a little too focused since she didn’t appear to have any weapons and was alone. She was watching some deer at the water's edge. Ever so often she lowered her head and her shoulders leaned forward.

Kathleen walked out into a clearing and yelled, “Hello! How are you?”

The young woman instantly stood up and said, “Oh hello, I hope it’s okay that I am here.”

Kathleen slowly walked towards the water and replied, “Yes, this lake is enjoyed by many people who live in the area. The deer are so graceful to watch.”

“There are many birds here too. There’s a small green bird that keeps hiding behind the tree and then poking its head out.

Stopping closer to the young woman Kathleen asked, “Does he make a sound like he is saying boo?”

“Yes, he does. It’s so adorable. What kind of bird is he?”

“He’s called a Peek-a-boo finch. They are only found between this lake easterward to the Chunky River. They are protected because they are rare.”

“Who protects them?” asked the younger woman.

“I do and my small group of warriors. My name is Kathleen. Is everything okay?”

“Oh you know. I am chilling. My name is Serena. It’s nice to meet you.”
